What is PHC? Everything To Know About H4CBD

1 comment May 10, 2023

Gone are the days of marijuana products with just THC or CBD. As the hemp industry continues to thrive and evolve, researchers have unearthed an abundance of cannabinoids. These include Delta 8, HHC, Delta 10, THCh, THCp, THCv, THCm, and the list goes on.

One of the latest compounds to hit the scene is PHC. If you want to learn more, you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to tell you everything you need to know about the PHC cannabinoid including what it is, its effects, and where to find the best PHC products on the market.

PHC / H4CBD Background

As leaders in the hemp field, we are continuously researching and making new discoveries. One day, when our PhD Chemists were hard at work in our lab, they realized they chemically stumbled upon a new compound.

At the time, we called it PHC, to stand for Proprietary Hydrogenated Cannabinoid. After gaining more traction in popularity, the cannabinoid PHC is now formally known as tetrahydrocannabidiol, or H4CBD for short.

We’ve been able to incorporate this new compound in some of our highly acclaimed premium blends. For the sake of clarity and continuity, we’ll call it PHC in this post. Moving forward you may notice our new packaging refers to it as H4CBD.

Don’t fret, we're referring to the same cannabinoid.

What is PHC Weed?

PHC weed is nothing more than cannabis or hemp buds infused with a "Proprietary Hydrogenated Cannabinoid" or PHC, known as tetrahydrocannabidiol, or simply H4CBD.

This innovation involves hydrogenation, a chemical process that alters the molecular structure of CBD, resulting in H4CBD. To make PHC weed, the buds are sprinkled with an oil-like or powdery PHC extract, which enhances its therapeutic properties and potentially offers out-of-ordinary effects.

What is PHC Distillate?

PHC Distillate is one of the purest and most concentrated forms of PHC available. In fact, PHC distillate is the substance used to infuse hemp buds to make PHC weed.

To make PHC distillate, the cannabis plant material goes through a meticulous distillation process in which CBD and terpenes are isolated, leaving behind plant matter and impurities.

The resulting refined product boasts high CBD concentrations that manufacturers further hydrogenate into PHC. This distillation process ensures the removal of any unwanted elements, while hydrogenation significantly increases the potency of CBD.

So, PHC distillate is basically the purest and most concentrated form of PHC.

What is PHC Live Resin?

PHC Live Resin is another manifestation of the innovative infusion process applied to cannabis. In this case, the focus is on preserving the essence of the plant by utilizing freshly harvested and flash-frozen cannabis buds.

The term "live" refers to the use of fresh, uncured cannabis material to capture a broader spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes. The live resin manufacturing process involves extracting these compounds in their most natural state to capture the plant's original flavors and aromas.

To make PHC live resin, manufacturers generally isolate the cannabinoids and terpenes separately to hydrogenate CBD into PHC more easily and preserve a greater amount of terpenes.

Both substances are then carefully mixed, resulting in one of the most innovative extracts and true-to-plant flavors available on the market. Besides PHC's increased effects, the higher terpene content further boosts the entourage effect, for a more enjoyable and therapeutic session.

What is the Cannabinoid PHC?

So what is PHC? PHC or H4CBD is CBD (Cannabidiol) that has had one of the hydrogens at position 4 of the pentyl chain replaced by a hydroxy group, a process called hydrogenation.

In other words H4CBD is a hydrogenated form of CBD, much like how HHC is a hydrogenated form of THC. PHC / H4CBD is actually one of the main metabolites of CBD by the human liver microsomes.

This is similar to how 11-Hydroxy-THC is a main metabolite of THC. Because any alteration in a natural compound is regarded as a synthetic form of the original, H4CBD is considered a synthetic cannabinoid.

What Effects Does the Cannabinoid PHC Bring?

PHC is a mildly psychoactive cannabinoid. Its effects are sativa-like, inducing uplifting, slightly euphoric feelings. Reported users have noted its prominent therapeutic effects, which we’ll get more into later.

PHC, or H4CBD isn’t known to have a great amount of psychoactive effect on its own, however when combined with certain other cannabinoids, it can intensify the overall effects. We can attribute this to the entourage effect.

A great example of the entourage effect is our Euphoria blend. When our PhD Pharmacist combined H4CBD, or PHC, with the other cannabinoids of this highly appraised blend, the effects epitomize euphoria.

Of course, cannabinoids’ effects may vary from person to person.

But overall here are some of H4CBD’s most reported effects:

  • Happiness
  • Relaxed
  • Mild feelings of euphoria
  • Anxiolytic properties (reduces anxiety)
  • Relief

How Strong is PHC?

Experts and user testimonials suggest that PHC is approximately 100 times more potent than CBD. Experts acknowledge it has psychoactive effects.

PHC is garnering attention not only for its potential benefits but also for its role in enhancing the entourage effect in cannabinoid blends. This synergy amplifies the impact of other cannabinoids and contributes to the unique properties of each cannabinoid blend.

PHC Potential Benefits

PHC (H4CBD) also has potential medicinal benefits, as it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Many of its users often experience a distinct effect that can provide intense relaxation and relief from physical tension.

This is what makes it a key component of our Recover blend, an all encompassing cannabinoid blend that can help ease body aches and muscle tension.

Does H4CBD Get You High?

Unlike THC, which tends to be highly psychoactive, H4CBD does not get you high. However, it is considered psychoactive in the way caffeine or nicotine is. It’s about 100 times stronger than CBD, making it a better and more potent alternative.

H4CBD, or 4-cannabidiol, has some promise in having some potential therapeutic benefits, whether that means relieving the stress of facing symptoms of illness head-on.

H4CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system without causing euphoria or psychoactive effects, making it a potential ally in the search for alternative therapies

Is H4CBD Psychoactive?

H4CBD or 4-cannabidiol is considered psychoactive, although it doesn’t necessarily get you “high,” as it doesn’t provoke intense euphoric effects or “trips.”

H4CBD interacts mostly with CB2 receptors, which don’t typically associate with the euphoric or intoxicating effects that you might expect from THC, which is linked to the CB1 receptors.

Is H4CBD Safe?

More research needs to be done in order to conclusively talk about the long-term effects of H4CBD, but there are some factors to take into consideration to keep you safe when consuming products with 4-cannabidiol.

It’s always important to keep in mind dosage, individual health conditions, interactions with other medications, mood, and personal tolerance. It’s also crucial to only consume products from verified brands that third-party lab test their product to ensure safety and potency.

Is H4CBD Stronger than HHC?

H4CBD and HHC have different effects, with HHC being highly psychoactive and intoxicating, while H4CBD is more like a much more intense version of caffeine or nicotine. It’s psychoactive but not intoxicating.

What is the Formula for H4CBD?

The chemical formula for H4CBD is C21H30O2, which represents the molecular structure of 4-cannabidiol. H4CBD’s chemical composition has carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.

Where to Find Delta 8 Near Me

Another incredibly popular cannabinoid is Delta 8 THC. It’s actually one of the first hemp-derived cannabinoids to make waves in the industry after the 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law.

And for good reason too, it’s known to provide relaxing, euphoric effects. In fact, one study’s participant dubbed it “Delta-9-THC's nicer younger sibling” as many report it is less likely to cause anxiety than standard THC.

We understand the struggle of finding consistent, high quality Delta 8 products like disposable vapes, vape cartridges, edibles, prerolls, and more. That’s why we decided to make it easier with our store locator. Now you can find the best Delta 8 in a shop near you with ease. Which Mellow Fellow PHC (H4CBD) blend is your favorite? FAQs

Does H4CBD Get You High?

H4CBD doesn’t get you high, although it does have psychotropic properties. It’s more like caffeine or nicotine since it may provoke a “buzz” or invigorating effects but without the intoxicating effects of cannabinoids like THC.

Is H4CBD the Same Thing as HHC?

H4CBD and HHC are two completely different cannabinoids. Although they may share some chemical similarities since they belong to the same family of cannabinoids, they have different effects and are not the same thing.

Are There Strains with H4CBD?

Some brands have made available products with higher amounts of H4CBD or 4-cannabidiol as the cannabis industry continues to expand into new technology.

How Does PHC Live Resin Compare with PHC Live Rosin?

Although they may appear similar, PHC live resin and live rosin are significantly different. PHC live resin is a solvent-based extract that blends PHC distillate with live resin, resulting in extremely high terpene content. In contrast, PHC live rosin is solventless as live rosin is obtained with heat and pressure instead of solvents, resulting in a potentially cleaner extract but with a slightly lower terpene content.
