In our previous blog, we talked about Delta-8. Let’s learn more about the incredible relationship between hemp-derived compounds and our endocannabinoid system. Read on as we discuss the Entourage Effect, what it is, and how it works to help our system.
What is the Endocannabinoid System?
Before we can talk about the entourage effect, it’s important to understand the basics of the endocannabinoid system. This system, consisting of endocannabinoids (anandamide & 2-AG) and cannabinoid receptors (CB1 & CB2), is responsible for working with phytocannabinoids (such as delta-8) to bring the body back to homeostasis (balance). The discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the 20th century blew the doors of the new wellness movement wide open, making way for the hemp-based renaissance which is happening today.
What is the Entourage Effect?
The entourage effect refers to what happens when several compounds of the hemp plant work together to create a more potent impact than just one component on its own. In other words, rather than just using products with isolated CBD in them (for example), for more of a maximum experience, be sure to stick with selections that include more beneficial components found in the hemp plant. So, what are these crucial components?
Phytocannabinoids
The hemp plant contains over 100 compounds, known as phytocannabinoids. However, even though they come from the same source, this does not mean that all phytocannabinoids have the same effects on the body and mind when isolated – with one of the main differences being whether or not the particular compound is considered to be psychoactive or non psychoactive.
Some notable phytocannabinoids: CBD, CBG, CBN, & CBV.
Terpenes
Terpenes are the naturally-occurring organic compounds found in the hemp plant that give different cultivars their specific aromas. But, of course that’s not all. Terpenes are responsible for supporting the other compounds such as the above-mentioned phytocannabinoids by enhancing their effects and thereby creating a stronger entourage effect.
